But he doesn't end.  He is more than what we can see.  More than we can know. He is the God immortal, invisible.  And holy. And loving.

May He grant us eyes to truly see.  Hearts to truly be.  Minds to truly know Him and His reality.

Ever wonder how the martyrs do it?  Really?  The stories aren't just fairy tales.  They are real people who feel pain-physical and emotional...and spiritual --like us.

Forget martyrs.

  Sometime the everyday, western world life can be painful too.  We look around, and gee, we really shouldn't say we suffer.  We have food, clothing and shelter. And no one is shooting at most of us.  We can say what we want, when we want.  We can work, play, fight, go to the doctor, choose to worship and where and when.  We can change jobs change our location, change styles.  We can cry, create and give.  

But we still hurt.  Our hearts yearn for what is not.  Joys disappoint.  Hopes fade.  Dreams die.  Friends leave.  Lovers hate.  His presence sometimes seems far.  His provision is a mystery.  He plan leads to a place we do not know.  Sin has corrupted our world thoroughly. 

 Our inmost being knows that all is not right in the world.  Things are awful, really.  One of the terrors of adulthood is understanding just how out of control the world really is.  The world at large.  And our own little world.  There is very little that is safe, predictable, painless even in the smallest microcosm of our itty- bitty, self-absorbed world.

Things go wrong.  people go wrong.  we go wrong.  

But the rejoicing is to happen, not when all is right in our own little world, or the universe at large.

It happens in the circumstances.

BlueLetterBible.org tells me that joy means gladness.  I will be glad in the God of my safety.  It looks bad for Habakkuk--enemy attack, no food, no shelter.  But He claims God as his safety, and chooses joy.  

It is good that we are to abide in him. Wherewithal...I know that I do not have it in myself.  But He works in us to will to act according to His good purposes. Philippians 2:13

It's who He is, not what our circumstances are that bring us joy.  

May He be He fill our vision.

Joy is not the lack of trouble

Joy is not having what we want when we want.

And prosperity "gospel" teaching is simply untrue.  God doesn't bless you if you get it just right.  He is gracious to you and gives you things you don't deserve.  And He is merciful...He doesn't give what we do deserve.

There are times we are in the will of God and are pressed, abandoned, and in hardship.  A cursory look at the life of Paul will remind us of that.  But it is His grace that sufficient for us, even in the times that are so difficult.  It is disturbing that so often we think we must have missed God's call because it's hard or we are not having the "success" we were expecting.

We do not have His perspective.  Only He knows what effect things are having here or in the heavenlies.  We are to keep our eyes on our Jesus, be like Him, and worship Him.  We are to obey Him.  We are not responsible for the harvest.  We are not in charge of the consequences.  That would be us trying to usurp His place.

It doesn't always look like we expect

I was nearly half way through the blessing before I realized it was an answer to prayer.  Finances are making everyday life challenging, but both my husband and I had a desire to have a little vacation with our children.  It'd been a few years, and we yearned for some time to spend together and break from the stresses a bit.

We didnt' see it coming.  It wasn't our plan.  And we didn't have the stresses of planning it!

We were presented with an opporutnity to spend some time with a couple dear to us.  They only had time on Saturday and Sunday and then they would be gone for an unkown amount of time.  So we packed up the boys and took them to our favorite trail and then a cook-out in the woods, complete with smores and singing around the campfire.

Then we slept in our own beds

And after church meeting, we were off again.  We went to a state park, picking up "cheap pizza" and going prepared for supper.  We ate lunch and fed pizza crusts to the ducks.  A game of ultimate frisbee ensued.  And there was playing in the creek.

Time of refreshing, fun, together.

And a prayer answered while we were just intending to extend kindness to some friends.

Don't miss the answer to your prayer just because it doesn't look like you planned.

And  humbly, thankfully, accept the gift given.

Example of joy in suffering

Who for the joy set before Him endured....

Have you contemplated that?  The God of all , took on flesh, and endured emotional, social, physical and spiritual pain.....how?  By looking to the joy set before him.

When happiness is not now, sometimes we are tempted to loose heart.  So often we see only now.  But we are to look beyond now, to what the sure Word of God proclaims to be true.  We will not always suffer.  There will really come a time when we no longer sin and are truly whole in every way...because we will see Him as He is!

I found myself thinking of the Crusades again yesterday.  There was a great passage in The Boy Knight by Henty that explained them.

And I wondered how much we as individuals, as well as local churches, make the same error.

We think we know what God wants.

We proceed with great force.  

Some totally depending on and trusting in God

Again .  

Well, that was a mess, so we try again.

With a different tactic, a different set of people, a different "heart"

Thousands of people died, some totally relying on God to provide them food, shelter and success as they were doing God's work reclaiming the holy land from the infidel.

Then hundreds of thousands died.

And though there were some brief successes, they failed..  miserably.

While I honestly believe that there are times we are being obedient to God, but His plan is not for what we would deem "success", I wonder if there are areas in our lives, or the our lives as the church, that we are using the Lord as an excuse for our own agenda.  Or we sincerely think we know the Father's world, but we are so sincerely wrong.

How are joy is devesated , how our strength is sapped and bitterness creeps in when we labor so completely in the Lord's name (sincerely or not) but are not truly walking in His ways.

 May He grant us eyes and hearts to see Him.  And His way. And may His joy be truly our strength.

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
